Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipes & Drums

In 2018, the Pipes & Drums celebrated their 20th year as a volunteer program of the RCMP. As part of the RCMP’s 125th Anniversary Celebrations in 1998, the Commissioner of the RCMP authorized a unique tartan for the Force, permitting them to wear the distinctive ‘scarlet tunic’, for which the RCMP is known the world over.

The ‘Certificate of Registration’ for the RCMP Tartan issued by the Scottish Tartan Society of Pitlochry, Scotland, was presented to the Force by The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, in Fredericton, New Brunswick in June of 1998.  Within weeks of this presentation the first composite band of RCMP Pipes & Drums paraded with their new tartan and distinctive kilted order of dress at the [now Royal] Nova Scotia International Tattoo in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

From such modest beginnings, the RCMP national program of community pipes & drums has grown from one to eight bands nation-wide. Similar to most police pipe bands within the Commonwealth, RCMP pipe bands are comprised of some active police officers and civilian musicians, all of whom volunteer their time and wear the uniform of the corps in proud service to their communities.

The bands perform at events in their local communities and occasionally farther afield having represented Canada at events in the USA, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Bermuda and China.

The band performing in the RNSIT this year has been drawn from each of the eight bands that support the RCMP across Canada.  The performers have been carefully selected to reflect the best of their individual bands.  All assembled, the players represent the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

The RCMP Pipes and Drums is under the direction of Pipe Major Wayne Moug, Drum Major Angela Corscadden and Lead Drummer Robin Reid.
