Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces Band, Tokyo
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Band, Tokyo (Tokyo Band) was established in 1952. The Tokyo Band performs under the direct control of the Minister of Defense and holds performances throughout Japan and all around the world.
Some recent Tokyo Band events include high-profile festivals such as the Military Tattoos in Oslo, Norway, and Basel, Switzerland. Additionally, select Tokyo Band personnel participate in the yearly JMSDF Training Squadron Cruise as part of the Training Squadron Band which performs various concerts all around the world in support of the exercise. The Training Squadron Band’s main mission is to promote international relations through the power of music.
Notable recent achievements include receiving the “Colonel George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Bands Award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation in January, 2018. This is a highly coveted award. The Tokyo Band is very honored to have been selected as one of the most excellent military concert bands in the world.
PO3 Mariko Nakagawa from the band will also perform as one of the soloists in the Tattoo.
